The Republic of Consciousness Prize has announced its longlist for 2019. The prize recognises books published by small presses.*
I’ve read three of the novels on the longlist, which means… that I’ve read three books on the longlist… stop trying to find a deeper meaning people.
Murmur by Will Eaves is bloody brilliant, another of those books I’ve rambled on about elsewhere; The Cemetery in Barnes by Gabriel Josipovici – which I discussed on Facebook – is bloody brilliant as well; and Lucia by Alex Pheby, which I’ve not discussed anywhere is, as they say in the classics, bloody brilliant (Pheby has a fantasy novel coming out later in the year apparently… must chase that up for possible review).
Of the other 10 books, I’m really only aware of Hang Him When He Is Not There by Nicholas John Turner, which was recently republished by Splice, having originally come out in Australia in 2016. The rest are a mystery and I look forward to dipping into them over the next twelve months. Of course, I have to first finish dipping into last year’s longlist.
*By the by, RoCP has a Patreon site which, for $8 a month, you can get all the books that feature on the shortlist (announced in March). And they have a very entertaining monthly podcast where they highlight a book by a small press every month.
