Jules hated, I loved it.
The following has some slight spoilers. But nothing major. Promise.
Not as good as Children of Men or Little Miss Sunshine, but still an interesting mafia/cop/corruption movie. My main issues were the ending which was piss funny (though I doubt it was meant to be) and the fact it felt long… just as you thought it was gonna end, the movie added another layer. Normally, I don’t mind this, but there were times when the plot felt contrived.
Scorsese direction reminded Jules of a music video. It’s all quick cuts, non linear, and rock music. It gives the first hour a really sense of momentum, but I think Scorsese fumbles the ball a little toward the middle. Still, I like that sort of thing if done properly, and I think Scorsese mostly pulls it off.
The violence is great, and sudden and impactful. Just like it should be.
The acting is fantastic. Jules hates Nicholson for all the same reasons I thought he was great. Matt Damon was Matt Damon and I think DeCaprio is really improving as an actor. At least I find him more believable. Marky Mark is brilliant. And Alec Baldwin has a gut that now dominates each scene he is seen. Martin Sheen is the best actor in the Universe.
So, personally, I’d recommend The Departed. Though as Jules rightly points out, the women are depicted as whores, or willing to sleep with any guy who might look vulnerable. And she’s right. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
