The West Wing still wins (the Sorkin version, although I mostly liked the remainder). Mostly because of the degree of difficulty concerned–it’s on network TV rather than cable, but also because it’s fundamentally optimistic show and that’s very hard to do without being cheesy. I love The Wire, but I can’t help thinking doing a cynical cop show is easier somehow, and it’s certainly going to be the quicker route to the critics’ hearts.
That and the fact that the final season does get more than a little silly at times.

I LOVE THE FINAL SEASON!!!! What other show would spend so long looking at the homeless issue.
