Went and saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on Thursday night with Sara. I enjoyed it, though I’ve noticed that quite a few people thought it was ordinary. Me, I got sooooo into the spectacle and the excitement of it all. It helped that I was seeing the film with someone who was seeing it for the third time and had a real emotional attachment to what was going on. I just went along with the ride, cynicism off for a change. Refreshing.
Sara is now making me read the book, something… I’ll be honest… I really didn’t want to do. But now that I’ve started (I’m 142 pges in) I’ve discovered why Rowling is so popular. She’s a damn fine storyteller. Her sentences are easy to read, her characters are interesting and lively and she has a real joy for the world she’s created, all of which is expressed in the book. Okay, yeah, it could do with some editing, bits with the Muggles and Weasley’s that seem to just meander along, but that would ruin some of the fun as well. The thing is, I’ve just seen the movie, I know what’s going to happen next, and yet I’m finding reading the book such an enjoyable experience.
It’s also interesting too see what the film-makers kept and what they removed. So far I can see their logic and I agree wholeheartedly. I have a feeling fans of young Potter were not so happy.
