Across the three seasons, we follow the lives of Cary and Brooke, the middle-aged siblings of mega-teen superstar Chase Dreams. Cary wants to be a proper actor. Brooke wants to be noticed and do something significant. Neither are close to meeting their goals. They are insecure, narcissistic, and often about as self-aware as a turnip.*
The show does ladle out large heapings of cringe, which I know to some is an anathema. But given that nothing is taken seriously, it’s hard to feel too uncomfortable. And despite how awful Cary and Brooke regularly are, we do, with gritted teeth, sympathise with them. This is entirely because Drew Tarver and Helene York are magnificent in the roles of Cary and Brooke. They are supported by a sterling cast, led by the always amazing Molly Shannon as their mother, who supports Chase and then becomes uber-famous in her own right. Wanda Sykes is also hilarious.
In the final season, the show’s creators, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, remove the few guardrails that were adding a vague sense of realism to what was already an absurd series and go full bonkers. It results in some of the funniest and most surreal TV I’ve ever seen.
I know there’s a lot of product out there, but I’m telling you that The Other Two is worth your limited time and attention.
*No insult to turnips.
