This year I read 104 novel, 4 of which I didn’t finish.  My two favourite novels of the year – that is two books you should read immediately if you haven’t already, were:

  • A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James (the book that won this year’s Man Booker Prize); and
  • Europe in Autumn by Dave Hutchinson (which was nominated for the Clarke Award and the BSFA)

The following 12 novels are a mix of literary and genre novels that I loved and as with the above two books should be part of your 2016 To Read Pile if you haven’t already enjoyed them.

  • Bitterwood Bible by Angela Slatter
  • Authority (Southern Reach #2) by Jeff VanderMeer
  • Acceptance (Southern Reach #3) by Jeff VanderMeer
  • Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter
  • Lament for the Afterlife by Lisa Hannett
  • The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison
  • The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley
  • All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews
  • Clade by James Bradley
  • Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor
  • The Memory Garden by Mary Rickert
  • Refund by Karen E. Bender

In an upcoming post I’ll provide further stats around my year in reading with specific focus on the 22 award shortlists I completed.
