Sara is introducing me to the world of Anime. It’s a world I’ve kept away from since my Astro Boy, Battle of the Planets, Robotech days. Which was 20 or so years ago. We’re watching Gundam Wing. I know there’s better Anime out there, and I intend to watch it – you know Evangelion and Cowboy what’s his face and that other one with the guy whose an outlaw and the one with the mech suits (subtle joke there, THEY ALL HAVE FUCKING MECH SUITS). But we’ve started with Gundam because (a) Sara really likes it (b) it’s easy to get into and (c) it has motherfucker suits that fire motherfucker laser guns piloted by 14 year olds.

My observations:

The dialouge is mostly awful. I’ve read the subtitles, I’ve heard the dub. It’s awful. I’ve accepted it’s a cultural thing and that something is being lost in the translation. Everyone says what they think and states the bleeding obvious all the time. The funny thing, once you turn that part of your mind that hates that sort of dialouge off, you sort of get used to it

The Japanese know how to do huge space battles with massive explosions. For a laser beam slut like me, it’s fantastic.

Why does everyone have small faces but huge eyes? And does anyone else in the world find it freaky?

Did I mention the motherfucker laser guns.

Gundam Wing has a pretty interesting story and it’s easy to watch and a nice little entree into the big bad world of Anime.
