Wow!

I saw Butterfly Effect last night and I wasn’t expecting much.

Wasn’t I pleasantly surprised.

Starring the ever messy looking Ashton Kutcher, BE is one of the best time travel films I have ever seen. It’s time travel done right, without being bogged down in technobabble and silly explanations and classic phrases like “a rip in the space time continuum”. This is not some schlocky Hollywood time travel special effects extravaganza with a plot hole ridden story-line. This is time travel done by people who care.

Admittedly, the time travel aspect is never fully explained. But that’s fine. Writing/Directing team Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber (what a great name) have focussed more on the personal and emotional effects of time travel. And that’s how it should be.

This is a very dark, and at times shocking film. There are moments that actually made me jump from my seat. Not from fear, but from surprise. I honestly didn’t think a film starring Ashton Kutcher (you know, the guy from That 70’s show) could be so brutal.

So for all of you guys who missed the film at the theatres, go hire it out on DVD. The DVD comes with the Director’s preferred ending which is infinitely better to what they eventually screened at the cinemas.

I promise, you won’t be dissapointed. Well… okay… you might be… but that’s because YOU HAVE NO SOUL!!!!

P.S. I also saw Mystic River last night. It’s a good film, but not as good as the marvellous novel its based on by Dennis Lehane. Just my personal opinion.
