… okay finished with the crying.

My housemate Teej is watching American Football (Minnesota vs Chicago, I could not care less) and cooking Chinese. It smells luverly.

Last night I saw Zach Braff’s Garden State with Mitch.

It’s an okay movie. It has some great, quirky scenes and some laugh out loud moments and great acting from Natalie Portman and some interesting incidental characters and Ian Holm is real creepy as the dad but…

… it just doesn’t seem to hold together as a film. I think the film tries too hard to say something significant. There’s Jewish stuff thrown in, which is nice, except (and I’m gonna scream this one) JEWS BURY PEOPLE IN A SIMPLE PINE BOX, NONE OF THIS FANCY SHMANCY STUFF! But I’ve sort of got over the fact that Hollywood has never depicted Judaism properly. And I suppose its significant that Zach Braff’s character says that none of his Jewish friends ever go to Temple or do anything Jewish. Hollywood might be run by Jews, but that doesn’t mean they know about the traditions, the rituals, or the history.

I suppose that’s a shame. But if I ever become famous and powerful, I’ll write, direct, produce and star in a really boring movie that gets all the Jewish details right. There won’t be an actual plot, just Jews doing… Jewish stuff… like picking their nose and blessing the snot before eating it (bet you didn’t know you had to bless your own snot… God has everything covered…).

Anyway, I recommend the film for the quirkyness (I don’t think I spelt that right), but perhaps see it on DVD rather than go to the cinema.

By the way, I was kidding about the snot.
